OLD CANAL COFFEE CO.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do you roast your coffee? What is a fluid bed roaster?

A. We roast on a fluid bed roaster which is basically an open chamber which holds the coffee beans with a heater/blower under the chamber. Hot air is forced up into the mass of beans which “spout” in a fountainlike or fluid motion during the roasting process. The beans never come into contact with superheated drum walls as happens with drum roasters. Another advantage of fluid bed roasting is that chaff and smoke are immediately exhausted from the chamber during the roast ensuring a very clean roast. The last and probably most important feature is the highly accurate temperature control on the roaster. Accurate temperature control assures a predictable and uniform roast, time after time.

Q Where do you get your coffee?

A. We work with several international coffee brokers who travel the world seeking out exceptional coffee crops. They help us select the best coffees based on our customer’s needs. By working with experienced brokers, we are able to gain intimate knowledge of each coffee we roast and are able to have a connection with the growers who produce the coffees. We receive the green coffee in 60-70 kilo bags, about a ton at at time.

Q. Do you sell unroasted or green coffee to home roasters?

A. Yes, if you really want the freshest coffee and like experimenting, you can roast your own with the proper equipment. Please call for price and availability.

Q. Do you sell Fair Trade and Organic coffee?

A. Yes, but not exclusively. However, we seem to be selling more Fair Trade and Organic coffee all the time.

Q. What makes you a “micro-roaster” and what is the advantage of being a micro-roaster?

A. We roast all our coffee in small batches (about 10 pounds at a time), adjusting the hot air flow by hand. Being a micro-roaster allows us to purchase very small quantities of exceptional and rare coffee and roast them for our customers.

Q. Where is the best place to buy your coffee?

A. You can purchase our products by calling us at 1-260-969-8659 for direct shipment or you may visit Modoc’s Market next door to our shop in Wabash, Indiana. If you would like the name of a retailer in your area or are interested in our coffee for your store or restaurant, please call us.

Q. Can you help us develop a blend or do special labeling?

A. Yes, we are more than happy to assist you in developing a blended coffee specially for you and we do have the ability to print custom labels with your name or logo for gifting or any other reason. Just call for details.

Q. How can you help our organization with fund raising?

A. Selling gourmet coffee (beans or ground) is an excellent way for your organization to raise funds. We can design a program just for you that will ensure your fund raising success. Fundraising with gourmet coffee offers many advantages including a really “fresh” fundraising product, the ability to “private label” your coffee, free web site in conjunction with your fundraising campaign, and no up front costs to your organization. Just call us for more information.
